Interesting. There is NO peat in American bourbon (it would be an illegal 'additive'). Just the grains, yeast, and interaction with the charred, oak barrels. Diluted with reverse-osmosis water. I wonder if what you're sensing is a smokiness or woodiness from the barrel.

Hmm, US whiskies.  I love most of the stuff that comes out of Buffalo Trace.  It helps that they do so much cask strength stuff.  George T Stagg is brilliant bourbon, but also Sazerac is wonderful Rye.

I like some of the malt whiskies too like Stranahan's and McCarthy's, but there is a lot of other good stuff too.

Cheers

My two favorites are Macallan 12yr and Glenmorangie Port Wood Finish. I have had a lot of SMSW, I have been drinking them for 10yrs. I am always interested in suggestions on not as well known ones to try if any has some suggestions.

canadian mist, about $14.00 a liter, and cant beat the smooth taste, great straight or mixed with coke . but my all time fave is Jim Beam white label at about $18.00 a fifth, these prices reflect my area and may even be cheaper in your neck of the woods.

Glenlivet 12 y/o is by far my favorite but just recently discovered Lismore single malt. Is reasonably priced and has a full bodied flavor. Has become my house scotch and will stay so.
