Some friends of mine are going to Edinburgh and points north in
Scotland, and I would like to give them a private tour of a distillery.
The ideal one would have a congenial, informative guide and, of course,
a superb scotch. The islands are too far to go for the short time that
they will be in Scotland, but anyplace else might work. Thanks, Brandon |

Well, about the superb scotch... I guess that is a matter of personal taste The distillery closest to Edinburgh is Glenkinchie ( http://www.whiskyportal.com/distillery.asp?DistilleryID=22 - http://www.whiskyportal.com/distillery.asp?DistilleryID=22 ). In Glasgow, also not (too) far away you can find Auchentoschan ( http://www.whiskyportal.com/distillery.asp?DistilleryID=5 - http://www.whiskyportal.com/distillery.asp?DistilleryID=5 . A little north you can visit Tullibardine ( http://www.whiskyportal.com/distillery.asp?DistilleryID=28 - http://www.whiskyportal.com/distillery.asp?DistilleryID=28 ), recently re-opened. If you go further north, you really should go to the Speyside area ( http://www.whiskyportal.com/region.asp?RegionID=2 - http://www.whiskyportal.com/region.asp?RegionID=2 ), where you will find lots and lots of distilleries in a small area. If you can get to Perth an easy train from Edinburgh you can go to
Glenturret in Crieff (Famous Whisky Experience now unfortunately) which
has an excellent tour with whisky at the end and restaurant, a one
hour bus ride from Perth. Also near to Perth is Edradour and
Blair Athol both in Pitlochry which is around 30 mins by train from
Perth. Also Aberfeldy which is a taxi or bus ride from Pitlochry or "Leaving Edinburgh, cross the Forth Road Bridge. Join the M90 motorway and then the A9 Perth-to-Inverness trunk road. Leave the A9 at Ballinluig and follow the A827 alongside the River Tay to Aberfeldy. It is no longer an operating disitillery, but is run by Historic Scotland as a visitor centre and allows you to get closer to the whole whisky making process - without the smell and (at times) annoying tour parties!
